FIELD TRIP REPORT
Field trip or excursion is a journey by a group of people or an individual to a place away from their normal environment. The purpose of the trip is usually observation for education, non- experimental research or to provide students with experience outside their everyday activities, such as going camping with teachers and their classmates. The aim of this research is to observe the subject in its natural state and possibly collect samples. It is seen that more advantaged children may have already experienced cultural institutions outside of school, and field trips provide a common ground with more advantaged and less advantaged children to have some of the same cultural experiences in the arts
Field trips are most often done in
three steps; preparation, activity and follow up activity. Preparation applies to both students and the teacher. Teachers often take the time to learn about the destination and the subjects before the trip. Activities that happen on the field trips often include: lectures, tours, worksheets, videos and demonstration, follow up activity are generally discussion that occur in the classroom once the field trip is completed.
Field trips provide alternative educational opportunities for children and can benefit the community if they include same type of community service. Field trip also provide students the opportunity to take a break from their normal routine and experience more hands on learning.
NEED AND IMPORTANCE
Education and learning processes should not only be limited to the classroom environment. The real world connection and hands experience are proven methods of better learning. In this, a student learning many things pertaining to a particular location like their traditions, practices, languages, etc.
Theoretical knowledge in the books is not always enough to furnish the essential information to the students. The retention of a concept is better when the student experiences it practically. Field trip act as a significant help in this area. A student might read flora and fauna of a region, or the cultures and traditions prevalent there. But, to know the things in a much better manner, you have to experience the place yourself. Students are usually exited about the field trips. They take it as a mind refreshing and rejuvenating venture. It is an opportunity to come out of the classroom confinement and enjoy the embrace of classmates and peers. A learning lesson gradually accompanies a field trip. Teachers also get to analyze and observe the students in real life scenarios.
SHENDURNEY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY THENMALA
I conducted a study tour to shendurney wildlife sanctuary. The expectations were high and it was an wonderful experience to me. The was started on 30th October 2019 . At 10 AM I reached shendurney. My main objective was to visit the enormous rich biodiversity of the wildlife and to get an exposure to the wild pristine and dense jungles of shendurney wildlife sanctuary.
Shendurney wildlife sanctuary is a protected area in the western ghats. It was located in the Kollam district of Kerala and comes under the control of Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve. It was established in 25 August 1984 and comprises 172.403 sq.km. The name is a corruption of the chengurinji, a tree endemic to the region. Shendurney wildlife sanctuary is a treasure house of plant diversity. About 1257 species of flowering plants are found in the sanctuary of which 301 are endemic to Western ghats.
My aim was to make a jungle safari, and it was a rare opportunity to stay inside the forest, taking care not to alter the integrity of the ecosystem. After lunch, I started my most awaiting jungle safari at 1PM. It was an opportunity to watch birds, butterflies and other wildlife. The way passes through moist deciduous and semi evergreen forest with interspread Myristeia swamps. It was delightful watch the ornamental plants to wild piper vines all happily living together in the comfort of the dense forest. The deep valley of the sanctuary is a home of rich biodiversity of flora and fauna which can yield precious information about evolutionary biology and climate change.
The most refreshing site were found there was the Kalladayar. When I peep into the historical background of Kalladayar it was known that paleolithic people lived around this river in the Thenmala region. The river flows parallel with the Kollam shenkottai commercial highway. At punalur, a suspension bridge was constructed across this by Travancore Maharaja in British style. The endpoint of the river is the Ashtamudi kayal. The river bed is usually rocky, Thenmala dam built on the river. This is an irrigation dam mainly aimed at providing water to the downstream regions through out the year. I honestly enjoyed and embraced the stillness and beauty that lies in the river sides.
Tropical evergreen and semi evergreen forest cover a major area of the sanctuary. It has a presence of lion tailed Macquarie a highly endangered species. A broad of highly exclusive nocturnal forest bird, the great eared night jar was spoiled for the first time in Kerala.
The first ecotourism project in India, Thenmala ecotourism project has been formulated in and around shendurney. Another important aspect I noticed that the shendurney sanctuary has no sandal wood trees there.

The most refreshing site is Kalladayar. It also started raining slightly, it added colour to the mesmerizing beauty. I listen to the rhythm of falling rain, nothing was better than the rhythm of rain along the peaceful wilderness it. Rain made the whole landscape look fresh, green and glittering, I feel to throw my umbrella away and to enjoy the raindrops on my face and to play the puddles that follow.
