FIELD TRIP REPORT

A Field Trip is a visit to a place away from the normal place of study. The purpose of this trip is to provide students an experience outside the class rooms or labs. It also provides an opportunity non experimental research and helps bring all the students to a common platform irrespective of their social, economic & cultural background. While on an educational tour/field trip a student gets to experience first-hand the concepts which help in long term retention of the knowledge. If the class room teaching is followed up by a field trip, it helps in clearing the concepts & results in more effective learning. It also helps in application of ideas, theories & knowledge which ensure competence. Discussing during the trip help the students to find solutions to real life problems and makes them innovative. Field trips helps erase pressure the boredom & monotony of having to attend a lecture. It is fun way of learning & makes it more enjoyable.
As a part our field trip ,I got an opportunity to visit Indian institute of space science and technology ,Nedumangad, Trivandrum along with my friends and teachers. Our journey started on 25th september by 6.30 am and reached institute at 10.30 am .
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) is a government-aided institute and deemed university for the study and research of space science, located at Valiamala, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It is the first university in Asia to be solely dedicated to the study and research of Outer space. It was inaugurated on 14 September 2007 by G. Madhavan Nair, the then Chairman of ISRO. IIST was set up by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under the Department of Space, Government of India, former President of India, was the Chancellor of IIST. IIST offers regular engineering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programmes with focus on space science, technology and applications.
The institute recognizes the importance of research in developing future technologies and applications of space research . IIST encourages all its faculties members to guide and supervise young scholars for PhD programmes and for pos doctorate programmes . IIST also has a number of international collaboration , both as MoUs at level of institute and faculties to faculties collaborations.
As our group reached the institute , Dr Bindhu Krishna warmly welcomed us and guide us to various labs .Concerned lab in- charge explained various techniques available in each labs .
Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter on an atomic , molecular and supramolecular scale .Nanotechnology as defined by size is naturally very broad , including fields of science as diverse as surface science ,organic chemistry ,molecular biology semiconductor physics ,energy storage ,molecular engineering etc .The facilities such as Atomic Force Microscope, Particle Size Analyzer, Glove Box, electrospinning machine, contact angle goniometer, HPLC, planetary ball mill and surface area analyser are available in the centre .
(a) Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is an easily version of scanning probes .AFM consist of a cantilever with sharp probe tip at its end used for scanning specimens.When tip is brought to the proximity of sample lead to the deflection of cantilever due to the surface force between tip and sample .AFM has different modes :Contact mode, Tapping mode, Non-contact mode .
(b) UV –Visible spectrophotometry refers to the absorption or reflectance spectroscopy in UV region and adjacent visible region . Molecules containing bonding and non-bonding electrons can absorb energy in the region of uv or visible light and excited to higher higher antibody molecular orbitals and they relaxes by emitting energy.
(c) Spectrofluorometer is an instrument which take advantage of fluorescent property of some compound inorder to provide information regarding the concentration and chemical environment in a sample .A certain excitation wavelength is selected and emission is observed either at a single wavelength, as a scan is performed to record intensity versus wavelength .
(d) BET analyser provides precise specific area evaluation of materials .BET is used to determining a range of disperse ,solid,microporous to mesoporous materials ,

Holography is a method that uses the wave character of light which depicts an exact description that goes beyond the options of classic photography .A hologram is a 3-D picture made from laser.
Around at 1 pm ,I had our lunch provided from institute canteen itself. After that I moved to the library of IIST.
The library and information service centre of IIST is housed in a six storied building at hub of the campus .It had well choosen collection of books , journals ,and e-books for various subjects .The library has a self contained publication wing for designing , printing , and binding in- house publications .
I left the institute along with my friends and teachers around by 4 pm.
It was really a wonderful experience to visit such a prestigious institution. Also had an opportunity to have a look on various instruments that only familiar through textbooks images . I was totally amased of the infrastructure facilities provided by trhe institute .It was really informative and really memorable experience for me.Organising such field trip would really influence the students and enhance their interest and curiosity towards concerned subjects.
