A group of psychologist having similar point of views and making similar approaches to study human mind or behaviour constitute a schools of thought in psychology. The important schools of psychology are Structuralism, Functionalism,Behaviourism,Psychoanalysis and Gestalt psychology.
J.B.Watson,an American psychologist is the founder of the behaviourist school which came into existence as a protest against structuralism and functionalism. The other notable psychologists of this school were Skinner,Pavlov,Hull etc. According to the behaviourist school psychology is a purely experimental branch of natural sciences, the object of which is to elaborate, control and predict behaviour. The important tenets of behaviourism are behaviour is merely the response to some environmental stimulus. it is guided by senses and it can be explained in terms of the association between stimulus and response.Environmental forces are more important in determining the behaviour and shaping the personality of an individual.
Behaviourism advocated the use of reinforcement and rewards place of punishment and uplesant experience as inducement for the acquisition of desirable behaviour and for giving up the undesirable.
Behaviourism focused its attention totally on the overt or observable behaviour of man and neglected the covert.
