English has spread over the length and breadth of the globe that the sun never sets over its linguistic empire.Now, for the East ,English is a window to the West,it is the window to the East. The chief agent of globalisation during the past two centuries was English language.Macaulay’s Minute brought about the waves of industrial revolution , Renaissance, Reformation and Enlightenment of the West to the Indian soil. Western poetry ,fiction ,literary forms like novel,elegy and criticism,political thoughts, journalism, philosophy, religion, law etc. influenced India very much.Reciprocally Indian philosophy, religion ,Spirituality, literature as old as the Vedas ,Upanishads and other scriptures of India were translated to English.
Great Indian scholars and intellectual giants like Raja Ram MohanRoy , swamy Vivekananda, Dayand Saraswathy and Shri Aurobindo spread the values of Indian culture and tradition in the west through their powerful English. In turns western scholars like Max Muller and Schopenhawver became intrested in Indian culture and thought through English. Departments of Indology were installed in western universities . Eminent western scholars like James mill , Elphystone and Vincent smith wrote the history of India in English. it was through English only Indian history and culture came to be of interest to the west. several of our philosophical and literary works starting from the Upanishads down to Geetanjali of Rabrindranath Tagore became familiar to the west through English translations.
The following remarks of Dr. S.Radhakrishnan will substantiate the importance of English as a window on the world. ” It (English) is a language which is rich in literature humanistic,scientific and technical. if under sentimental urges , we should give up English, we would cut ourselves off from the living stream of ever growing knowledge.” In this context , it is worthwhile to remember the aphoristic remark of Pandit Jawaharlala Nehru, ” English is our major window on the world.”
