Most of us seem to have no idea of what higher education is and whom it is meant. Colleges are often considered to be rest houses or waiting sheds for young men and women who fail to get admission to professional colleges. If they ail to get admission to B.A or BSC course, they think that they have no future. When they pass BA or bsc degree examination, they want to be admited to M.A or MSC course. They consider it a great misfortune if they fail to get admission to MA or MSC course. What do they do after passing MA or MSC examinations? They sit for public service commission tests for recruitment of lower division clerks. when they get the post of a lower division clerk, they feel that they have obtained heavenly bliss. They feel that they are on top of the world.
If their aim in life is to becomea clerk in a government office, why should they waste five precious years of their life, studying for BA/BSC and MA/MSC? They should discontinued their studies after passing X standard or XII standard. After that they should spend their time preparing for public service commission tests. There are many institutes that help them to prepare for tests. Two years of such intensive preparation will do them more good than five years at a college or university. Public Service commission should also change their rules regarding minimum qualifications. The minimum qualification for the post of Secretariat Assistant and similar posts is now a degree. It should be reduced to a pass in Plus Two or XII standard. The minimum qualification for the post of lower division clerk should remain as it is- a pass in SSLC.
University education or college education should be confined to those who are in love with knowledge and wisdom. In other words, it should be confined to those who wish to become scientist, philosopher, mathematician, historians, thinkers and teachers. University students should never dream of becoming clerks. Their role models should be men like Socrates, Plato, Newton, Einsten, Toynbee, C V Raman, Abdul Kalam, Mahatma Gandhi and Jayaprakash Narayan. They should think of emulating such great men. University students should aim at making some significant contribution to knowledge. They should do something to make the life of their fellow citizens better.
University is a place for those who dream of doing something that will be remembered by prosperity. It is a place for those who wish to create knowledge. It is not a place for pedlars off knowledge.
